A richly adorned Ottoman manuscript containing a foundational collection of elementary Arabic grammar texts known collectively as Majm??at al-?arf. Included are the traditional sarf primers: al-Amthila, Bin?? al-Af??l, al-Maq??d, al-?Izz?, and Mar?? al-Arw?? These works introduce basic morphological concepts essential for the study of Arabic, covering the patterns and transformations of roots into various verb and noun forms. The manuscript opens with a personal note attributed to al-??jj Mu??af? Efendi, suggesting its early ownership and scholarly use. The science of ?arf, concerned with the internal structure and morphological changes of Arabic words, has been foundational to linguistic studies since the early Islamic period. It examines concepts such as verb conjugations, noun derivations, sound and weak verb patterns, and morphological irregularities like idgh?m, i?l?l, and ?adhf.
