Studi su Michelangelo e la famiglia Buonarroti», è dedicato al dipinto su tavola acquistato nel 1608 da Michelangelo Buonarroti il Giovane per collocarlo al vertice…del progetto decorativo in onore del celebre antenato, quale esempio della sua attività di pittore e come pendant della Battaglia dei centauri. Al momento dell'acquisto l'Epifania era considerata un autografo di Michelangelo; solo più tardi la tavola fu collegata a una testimonianza di Giorgio Vasari che la indicava come opera di Ascanio Condivi, pittore marchigiano e autore di una biografia di Michelangelo, pubblicata nel 1553. Grazie alla notizia vasariana è stato anche identificato il cartone elaborato dal Buonarroti per l'amico, ora al British Museum, unico cartone completo a noi rimasto dell'intera produzione di Michelangelo. Proprio grazie alla generosità del British Museum è stato possibile avviare nel 2022 un complesso intervento di indagini diagnostiche e di restauro sul dipinto dell'Epifania. Il volume è stato pensato per ospitare i risultati delle ricerche compiute intorno all'opera - dalla provenienza al contesto - e gli approfondimenti sulla stagione più avanzata del linguaggio di Michelangelo, ma anche su Ascanio Condivi pittore e scrittore, e sul colto contesto all'interno del quale nacquero il cartone e il dipinto; inoltre, ampio spazio sarà dedicato agli interventi di restauro e alle indagini scientifiche.

In questo volume, curato da Marcella Marongiu, per la prima volta le "opere in piccolo" sono protagoniste degli studi e della narrativa, attraverso una completa e scrupolosa ricognizione degli argomenti che configurano questo singolare aspetto della 'fortuna' dell'arte michelangiolesca, tendente a sfuggire alla percezione del pubblico ed elusivo anche per i conoscitori. A Michelangelo infatti si tende ad associare il gigantismo titanico delle figure, abitatrici e padrone di una dimensione spaziale fidante e pressoché sovrumana. E tuttavia, anche per il sommo Buonarroti il passaggio dell'invenzione dal concetto mentale grandioso alla piccola scala dello schizzo era tutt'altro che inusuale. È, questo, uno degli aspetti di maggior efficacia della padronanza del disegno, poiché il pieno controllo delle forme attraverso la conduzione grafica, a matita o a penna, consente alle forme stesse di transitare dal minuscolo al gigantesco senza nulla perdere di certezza proporzionale. Dal minuscolo al gigantesco, ma anche viceversa. Nei saggi di Marcella Marongiu, Barbara Agosti, Elena Calvillo, Federica Kappler, Massimo Romeri, Alessandro Cecchi, Marcello Abbiati e Laura Gianesini, il nucleo principale delle opere piccole trova un'opportuna e innovativa sistemazione, con precisazioni e osservazioni inedite che entrano così nel patrimonio delle convinzioni maturate e delle conoscenze condivise. Anche i profili attributivi di opere che vanno sotto i nomi di pittori come Perin del Vaga, Giulio Clovio e Marcello Venusti sono qui utilmente riconsiderati e all'occorrenza rettificati, con il risultato di riscattare importanti artisti dal ruolo che una certa sbrigativa visione critica ha loro assegnato di esecutore di ogni e qualsiasi derivazione michelangiolesca, a prescindere da requisiti come il livello qualitativo e la compatibilità stilistica. Oltre agli artisti, emergono da queste indagini aspetti delle personalità di amici e committenti e le parti da ognuno sostenute nella grandiosa "commedia umana", che per decenni vede Michelangelo al centro della scena: Tommaso de' Cavalieri, Vittoria Colonna, la potente famiglia Farnese al tempo di Paolo III e del gran cardinale Alessandro tornano co-protagonisti sul mobile e variegato sfondo di Roma, l'unica città veramente internazionale nel frammentato mosaico di stati della Penisola. Queste opere raffinate, pregiate e non di rado assai costose, che il corredo illustrativo documenta con dovizia, appaiono nella prospettiva storica come una fioritura smagliante e rara, sbocciata nel chiuso caldo d'una serra irradiata dalla luce creativa del "divino" Michelangelo.
