Dabei lassen sich Unterschiede aber auch Gemeinsamkeiten in der Instrumentalisierung der monument…a sanctorum, unter welchem Oberbegriff man Bauprojekte, literarische Selbstzeugnisse oder auch die performative Inszenierung von Heiligenauffindungen subsumieren kann, feststellen. Diese in einem detaillierten Vergleich herauszuarbeiten und Erklärungen für die gewählten Formen bischöflicher Vergegenwärtigung zu finden, ist das Ziel der vorliegenden Studie. Nach einer biographischen Skizze und einer Charakterisierung des kirchenpolitischen und sozialen Spannungsfeldes innerhalb dessen die beiden Bischöfe agierten (Kap. 1), werden die Veränderungen der christlichen Kulttopographie der Städte Rom und Mailand durch die Bauprojekte des Damasus und des Ambrosius untersucht (Kap. 2). Zunächst werden alle dem Damasus zugeschriebenen Baumaßnahmen anhand des archäologischen Befundes kritisch überprüft, um den tatsächlichen Umfang seiner Bautätigkeit zu erfassen und den Beitrag des Damasus zur Entwicklung einer christlichen Kulttopographie Roms einschätzen zu können (Kap. 2.1; Anhang A). Ein solcher Überblick über die Baumaßnahmen dieses römischen Bischofs lag bislang nicht vor. In seiner innerstädtischen Bautätigkeit folgte Damasus dem Vorbild seiner Vorgänger, trat so aber auch in Konkurrenz zu aristokratischen Kirchenstiftungen. Dabei wurde bislang nicht beachtet, dass er seine Titelkirche durch eine solea für die Bischofsliturgie qualifizierte. Die in der Forschung häufig als umfassend beschriebenen Maßnahmen in den Katakomben können nur in einem Fall sicher mit einer architektonischen Inszenierung des Grabes unter Damasus verbunden werden. Eine Verbesserung der Zugänglichkeit der Märtyrergräber lässt sich nicht nachweisen. Im Zentrum des darauf folgenden Abschnittes der Arbeit stehen die ambrosianischen Kirchenstiftungen (Kap. 2.2; Anhang B). Ambrosius kann entgegen der immer wieder vertretenen Meinung als Stifter von nur zwei Kirchen, die außerhalb Mailands lagen (basilica Apostolorum und basilica Ambrosiana), gelten. Der Vergleich der Bautätigkeit beider Bischöfe ergibt, dass beide ihren Einflussbereich besonders im Suburbium erweiterten und sich eine private Form christlicher Kultausübung, die der Märtyrerverehrung, aneigneten. Indem Ambrosius Reliquien in seine Kirchen und in die Liturgie integrierte, ermöglichte er deren kollektive Verehrung, entzog die Märtyrer aber zugleich dem direkten Zugang der Gemeinde. Somit war der Mailänder Märtyrerkult stärker als in Rom an die Person des Bischofs gebunden und erhielt einen offiziellen Charakter. Damasus dagegen wurde an zahlreichen Märtyrergräbern in den Inschriften genannt und so in der privaten Kultausübung zwischengeschaltet. Durch seine Involvierung in zwei Bauten an den Gräbern der Apostelfürsten unterstrich er die Vorrangstellung seines Bischofssitzes, der als einziger über zwei Apostelgräber verfügte. Das anschließende Kapitel bietet einen Vergleich der literarischen monumenta sanctorum (Kap. 3). Trotz des z. T. disparaten, literarischen Werks finden sich im Spiegel der epigraphischen Quellen formale und inhaltliche Übereinstimmungen. Die Unterschiede überwiegen aber: Die Märtyrer dienen in den Epigrammen des Damasus, die durch literarische Zitate die Bildung des Bischofs betonen, als historische Exempla und begründen den universalkirchlichen Führungsanspruch der römischen Diözese. Im Werk des Ambrosius spielen die Mailänder Lokalmärtyrer eine untergeordnete Rolle, heben aber die Leistung des Ambrosius hervor, der diese Wundertäter seiner Gemeinde offenbarte. Die performative Vergegenwärtigung bischöflicher auctoritas, untersucht am Beispiel der Märtyrerauffindungen, zeigt klare Unterschiede (Kap. 4). Dabei wird folgenden Fragen nachgegangen: 1. Woher wussten Damasus bzw. Ambrosius, wo zu suchen war? 2. Wie wurde ein Grab als das eines Märtyrer identifiziert? 3. Welche kultischen Handlungen wurden bei der Auffindung des Grabes vollzogen? 4. Welches Publikum wurde im Moment der Auffindung angesprochen? Dabei zeigt sich, dass Damasus' inuentiones gekennzeichnet sind von der Wahrung der Integrität des Grabes; er richtete sich an eine kleine Gruppe privilegierter Gemeindemitglieder. Ambrosius dagegen inszenierte die Auffindungen als Massenspektakel, das, verbunden mit der translatio, der Gemeinde seine Verfügungsgewalt über die Märtyrer vor Augen führen sollte. Im resümierenden Kap. 5 erweitern einige Aspekte (Gabentausch, Bischofsbestattung) das Gesamtbild der Inszenierung bischöflicher auctoritas durch Damasus und Ambrosius. Abschließend eint beide die Instrumentalisierung der monumenta sanctorum zur Stärkung ihrer Stellung in innergemeindlichen Konflikten. Damasus' Maßnahmen sind zusätzlich vom Primatanspruch des römischen Bischofssitzes bestimmt, wohingegen Ambrosius die Sicherung der eigenen memoria stärker ins Zentrum stellte. Leben und Werk der beiden Bischöfe Damasus und Ambrosius gelten als vermeintlich erschöpfend untersucht. Durch die angewandte Methode eines personalisierten Vergleichs gelingt es dennoch u. a. deren Strategien zur Sicherung der eigenen Stellung oder zur Inszenierung von Heiligkeit zu erhellen. Die dabei gemachten, neuen Beobachtungen und Erkenntnisse tragen zum besseren Verständnis des Christianisierungsprozesses und der Entwicklung des Märtyrerkultes im Allgemeinen bei. Die zukünftige Rolle des Bischofs und die Grundlagen seines teilweise überregionalen Einflusses werden in der zweiten Hälfte des 4. Jahrhunderts von Damasus und Ambrosius nachhaltig geprägt. In this regard we notice differences, but also similarities in their utilisation of the monumenta sanctorum, which include building projects and li…terary testimonies as well as the performative staging of inventions of saints. The aim of this study is to evaluate these similarities and differences in a detailed comparison and to find explanations for the chosen ways of asserting episcopal presence.Following a biographical outline and a characterisation of the ecclesio-political and social field within which the two bishops operated (Chapter 1), the changes to the Christian iconic topography of Rome and Milan caused by the building projects of Damasus and of Ambrosius are evaluated (Ch. 2).First, all building projects attributed to Damasus will be critically examined on the basis of the archaeological evidence in order to show the true extent of his building activities and assess Damasus's contribution to the development of a Christian iconic topography of Rome (Ch. 2.1; Appendix A). Such an overview of the building projects of this Roman bishop was not available before now. Damasus followed the example of his predecessors in his urban building activity, but thereby also engaged in competition with aristocratic church foundations. With regard to this, the fact that he qualified his titular church for the episcopal liturgy with a solea was not previously taken into account. The action in the catacombs, often described as extensive by researchers, can be linked to an architectural portrayal of the tomb under Damasus with certainty only in one case. An improved accessibility of the tombs of the martyrs cannot be confirmed.The following section of the paper focuses on the church foundations of Ambrosius (Ch. 2.2; Appendix B). Contrary to a frequently advocated opinion, Ambrosius can only be considered to be the founder of two churches outside of Milan (basilica Apostolorum and basilica Ambrosiana).A comparison of both bishops' building activity shows that both extended their area of influence, escpecially in the suburbium, and adopted a private form of Chritian cult practice, the cult of the martyrs. By integrating relics into his churches and into the liturgy, Ambrosius facilitated their collective worship while at the same time withdrawing the martyrs from direct access by the congregation. Thus, the cult of the martyrs in Milan was more closely tied to the person of the bishop than in Rome and gained an official nature. Damasus, on the other hand, was named in the inscriptions of many martyrs' graves and thus became an intermediary in private cult practice. By being involved in building projects around the tombs of the Princes of the Apostles, he highlighted the pre-eminence of his diocese, which was the only one to have two apostles' graves.The following chapter offers a comparison of the literary monumenta sanctorum (Ch. 3). Despite the largely dissimilar literary work, the epigraphical sources help to reveal correspondences in form and content. However, the differences prevail: In the epigrams of Damasus, which accentuate the bishop's education with literary quotes, the martyrs are used as historical examples and to justify the universal claim to ecclesiastical leadership of the Roman diocese. In the work of Ambrosius, the local martyrs of Milan play a secondary role but serve to highlight the achievement of Ambrosius in revealing these miracle workers to his congregation.The performative manifestations of episcopal auctoritas, analysed by using the example of the inventions of the martyrs, show marked differences (Ch. 4).
