Albert Hastings Markham (1841-1918) was the cousin of Clements R. Markham. He followed a naval career, and in the 1870s took part in several expeditions to the Arctic, notably on the Nares expedition of 1875-6, when he and his men reached a farthest north not surpassed until Nansen in 1895.

The uncommon first edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding. Admiral Sir Albert Hastings Markham (1841-1918) was a British explorer, author, and officer in the Royal Navy. He was appointed second-in-command of HMS Alert under Captain Nares for the British Arctic Expedition of 1875-6. He is also remembered for designing the flag of New Zealand. This biography, written by M. E. and F. A. Markham, was based on his journal and log-books, letters, and recollections from his cousin Mrs Clements. It relates his interesting voyages and naval career, as well as his early life and later marriage. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally very bright and smart.
