Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores a charitable institution from the perspectives of young women navigating class and societal pressures in the early 20th century boarding school system. This institution is on the brink of financial collapse and the ensuing plot development hinges upon the arrival of a mysterious, altruistic benefactor whose motives are at first unclear. The author delves into complex themes of social class, female empowerment, and questions of charity while offering a glimpse into the social mores and educational landscape of the time period. The unfolding story reveals the hidden struggles within the school and how the so-called charity pupil challenges society's judgments based on appearance and means, offering a unique perspective on the value and dignity of individuals within a stratified society. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Contact seller5-star sellerEarly reprint (first published 1871). Paged as [6], 13-555, [1]. Hardcover: H 19.25cm x L 21.5cm. Probable early 1900s rebinding - black pebbled cloth with gilt spine lettering; light rubbing and staining to boards; shallow chipping at frayed spine ends; slender wear at board corners. Replaced endpapers and flyleaves; ink ownership inscription for Nannie Herndon Rice Walker, Meadow Woods [plantation], Oktibbeha County, Mississippi on front flyleaf; varied toning, foxing, soiling, and staining to leaves with occasional pencil marks amongst text; handwritten recipe on folded toned sheet laid-in between pages 54-55; handwritten recipe on gummed section of envelope now adhered to page 360 obscuring text and causing tearing to leaf and probably can't be removed without causing further marring. Binding is firm. Classic late 19th century cookbook by prolific Virginia-born author Mary Virginia Terhune. Born in Talladega County, Alabama in July 1854, Nannie Herndon Rice (1854-1924) grew up on her father's plantation Meadow Woods in the Oktoc community near Starkville, Mississippi before marrying John Simpson Walker (1849-1931) who was a civil engineer and spent most of his professional career in Birmingham, Alabama.…
