Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This text examines the phenomenon of strain and stress magnification and reduction in the matrix and fibres, respectively, of uniaxially loaded, longitudinally aligned, continuous fibre reinforced composites. Various models are used in this study, including the method of direct deformation, assumption of the Reuss rule, use of the Halpin-Tsai semi-empirical equations, equivalence of strain energy and use of the representative volume element, in various combinations. The variations of the strain and stress magnification and reduction are examined and discussed in this text with reference to the reinforcing fibre volume fraction and also with reference to the (s/r) ratio. The various models used show the phenomenon to be significant and requiring attention in design in order to avoid unexpected failure. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Existing literature assumes the equality of elastic modulus under both tension and compression loading for all materials. That this is not universally true is demonstrated in the experimental data of some naturally occurring materials presented in the text. In cognisance of this phenomenon, analytical solutions for the elastic deformation of such materials in bending are developed. These are then applied to the experimental results presented in the text to determine the elastic modulus and bending moment of the materials in tension and compression, and to further locate the neutral axis for such dual moduli materials. It is necessary therefore, to take account of the dual moduli phenomenon when using materials that posses this property. This item is printed on demand.
