Marcellino (1814-1892) e suo fratello Giuseppe Roda (1854-1892) furono tra i principali botanici e giardinieri italiani del secondo Ottocento, a lungo attivi nei gia…rdini del castello di Racconigi. Recentemente proprio a Racconigi è stato dedicato loro un convegno internazionale dal titolo Marcellino e Giuseppe Roda, un viaggio nella cultura del giardino e del paesaggio. I fratelli Roda costituiscono un riferimento importante nel panorama del giardino piemontese ottocentesco. Ricchi di esperienze di viaggio, studio e confronto, dividono la loro attività fra il settore dei parchi pubblici e quello dei giardini privati e di corte. Figli di un giardiniere di corte, dopo aver studiato presso l'Orto Botanico di Torino, Marcellino è nominato giardiniere capo al castello di Racconigi, coadiuvato dal fratello Giuseppe. Destinati da Carlo Alberto a succedere a Xavier Kurten (?-1840) nella direzione del parco di Racconigi, dopo aver compiuto studi di paesaggio e topografia a Torino e Milano tra il 1840 e il 1843, i fratelli Roda, a spese della Real Casa sabauda effettuano un viaggio nel Lombardo Veneto, in Austria, Ungheria, Germania, Belgio, Olanda e Inghilterra per studiare l'arte dei giardini e l'amministrazione delle grandi tenute agricole. Nel 1854, partecipano al concorso d'idee per la progettazione del Parco del Valentino a Torino. Marcellino Roda, posto alla direzione del parco di Racconigi sino al 1859, è destinato in seguito alla direzione dei giardini e beni della Corona a Monza, sino al 1869, quando si ritira a vita privata a Torino, poco prima della sua nomina a direttore dei giardini del Comune di Torino. A Marcellino e Giuseppe Roda si devono anche numerose opere di manualistica. (R. In questa terza edizione, notevolmente ampliata rispetto alle due precedenti, ad un'introduzione di fisiologia botanica segue la sezione di arboricoltura con capitoli dedicati alla frutticoltura ed alla viticoltura. Marcellino fu giardiniere, direttore di giardini, architetto d'esterni nonché insegnante di arboricoltura e giardinaggio. Assieme al fratello minore Pietro Giuseppe è considerato uno dei principali esponenti della tradizione piemontese ottocentesca dell'arte dei giardini. Book.
