First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. First Edition. Thick Folio; viii, (2), 746 pages; Ouvrage contenant 5500 figures dessinees par Mm. L Steinheil et A. Riocreux. Contemporary quarter-leather over decorative stamped pebbled cloth boards; marbled endpapers; deckled edges. Quite a nice example of this large illustrated botanical treatise. Jean-Emmanuel-Marie Le Maout (1799, Guingamp â" 1877, Paris) was a French naturalist. In 1842, Le Maout qualified as a physician at the University of Paris, where he became a demonstrator of natural sciences in the Faculty of Medicine. Later he gave private lessons in literature and natural history. He was decorated with the Là gion d'honneur in 1869. Joseph Decaisne (1807 â"1882) was a French botanist and agronomist. He became an aide-naturaliste to Adrien-Henri de Jussieu (1797â"1853), who served as the chair of rural botany. It was during this time that he began to study plants brought back by various travelers like those of Victor Jacquemont (1801â"1832) from Asia. Decaisne used applied research, most notably on the agronomy of the madder, the yam and the ramie. He was also interested in algae. Illustrators: Alfred Riocreux (1820 Sevres - 1912 Paris), a French scientific illustrator and described as the "most distinguished botanical artist of his day". Alfred also worked at the Sà vres factory and his work, which included botanical drawings, was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1837, 1838 and 1855. In 1870 he was awarded the Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur. In 1856 he became a member of the Socià tà Impà riale et Centrale dâHorticulture. His interest in botanical illustration was furthered through meeting the botanist Adolphe Theodore Brongniart. It seems probable that Brongniart first introduced Riocreux to the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle, where he befriended the botanist and author Joseph Decaisne, who later named the genus Riocreuxia in his honour, and in turn, introduced him to Gustave Thuret. He also used Riocreux's talents to illustrate the nine volumes of "Le Jardin Fruitier du Musà um" (1858â"1875). This led to more illustrating for other botanists, such as Ãtienne Fiacre Louis Raoul's "Choix de Plantes de la Nouvelle-Zà lande" (1846), W.B. Hemsley's "Handbook of Hardy Trees, Shrubs, and Herbaceous Plants" (1873) and Gustave Thuret's "Notes Algologiques" (1876â"1880) and "Etudes Phycologiques" (1878), the latter being highly acclaimed. His illustrations were also used in the journals "La Revue Horticole and Annales des Sciences Naturelles". Ãdouard Andrà chose Riocreux to arrange the engravings for C.S. Sargent's "Silva of North America", in twelve volumes from 1890 to 1899.
