O carácter da superfície do implante é um fator de conceção que afecta a taxa e a extensão da osseointegração. Precisamente, a quantidade de superfície do implante que entra em contacto direto com o osso, a rapidez com que ocorre a osteointegração e a natureza mecânica da ligação osso-implante são influenciadas pela natureza da própria superfície do implante. Assim, desde o aparecimento dos implantes dentários, foram propostas modificações para conseguir uma melhor osseointegração e, por sua vez, taxas de sucesso mais elevadas. Este facto conduziu à microtopografia, macrotopografia e nanotopografia da superfície do implante.
