Reprint of book first published in 1885 by the Religious Tract Society: Fine red boards with gold lettering to spine, 11.5 x 8.0 inches approx. , near fine coloured pictorial dust jacket, a hint of creasing at extreme outer edges, not price clipped, no inscriptions, 216 pages, illustrated in black and white.

Cloth. Condition: See Note. A 1903 edition of a book containing the works of 6 authors in one volume. The pages of the text are very clean without any notes or highlighting, and there is very little discoloration/browning or foxing. The cover, however, shows signs of its age. The spine has detached from the front cover book board (cracking is visible from the inside) and there are streaks and spots of discoloration or damage. Cloth is tearing at corners and spine, with underlying boards visible/exposed in those places. At edges there is also color loss where cloth is not torn. The inside front cover end paper is detached from the page that follows, and some tears can be seen on the last pages. Back end paper is beginning to peel from the cover book board. Illustrated - coloured frontis, many engraved illustrations ( some full page ) in this lovely example of the England title in the series of " Pen and Pencil " books. Undated, but looks to be c1880. The green cloth has blindstamped floral and leaf decoration around a central panel depicting a church amidst numerous trees heavily done in gilt, with equally attractive gilt titles. The spine is also decorated and titled in gilt, with a plain, blindstamped panelled rear cover. This binding is in exceptionally bright and sound condition, the spine is perhaps slightly faded only. Plain brown endpapers very sound, no splitting of hinges. Blotchy foxing to rear of front endpaper and rear of frontis, remainder of text clean and crisp, tight. Near fine. Heavy book, when wrapped appropriately it weighs c1300g thus exceeding the 1000g default for the automatic postage quotation - the extra postage will be requested at time of order or enquiry.if to be sent by 1st class UK post or overseas, 2nd class UK no need. Baptist minister Manning was editor for the RTS and well travelled, writing books on America, Palestine and many more places. Bound in full blue leather raised bands to spine with compartments heavily decorated in gilt. Red leather labels lettered in gilt to two spine compartments. Gilt decorative monogram to front. Ruled gilt to edges of boards. Gilt dentelles. Marbled endpapers. Tissue guard to colour frontis., with integral engraved illustrations and full page illustrations throughout. Small4to: 275 by 195mm (10¾ by 7¾ inches). Some slight edge wear with loss of colour to the leather to teh very edges in a very few places and a tiny bit of gilt likewise lost in just a few places. Leather in otherwise very good condition unfaded and with the gilt bright. An attractive copy of this lovely book, rarely seen in a fine binding. Very good copy.
