Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. ca. 1876, Good Condition, 4to, Hardcover Pictorial cloth binding with gilt and black designs and titles to spine and front board in good condition. Gilt edged pages, Title Page & endpaper heavily foxed, Contents Clean, 224pp + Illustrations A Victorian travelogue in its original gilt decorated cloth,…notable for the survival of an inserted printed presentation slip dated 10 February 1877, addressed to George Leopold Bryan, M.P., and sent with the compliments of the Lord President of the Council from Downing Street. The slip explains that a tariff catalogue officially recognized as a standard Book of Reference was being forwarded to Bryan, translating United States import duties into English currency. The recipient, George Leopold Bryan (1828 1880), was a prominent Kilkenny landowner, High Sheriff, and later a Home Rule aligned Irish MP. His political career and connections to the Privy Council make the presence of this document highly plausible as part of his parliamentary briefing material. The notes formal tone Downing Street 10th February, 1877 and its reference to U.S. tariff policy situate it firmly within the eras debates on Anglo American trade. Probable provenance: From the personal library of George Leopold Bryan, M.P., the Downing Street slip likely laid into the volume by Bryan himself or his household. The book later remained with the Jenkinstown estate family line until dispersal. A desirable association copy, pairing an illustrated 19th century American travel work with a rare surviving piece of official government correspondence linking an Irish MP to British Cabinet level trade communications. Feel free to contact us for a detailed account of the provenance of this book.
