Condition: Very Good. First Edition. A monumental combined edition of Redouté?s most celebrated botanical masterworks, elegantly preserved in a bespoke fine binding by Bayntun of Bath. This volume brings together the 1954 and 1956 Ariel Press first printings, featuring forty-four exquisitely produced full-color plates that capture the 'Raphael of Flowers' at the height of his powers. Patronized by both Marie Antoinette and Empress Joséphine, Redouté?s work represents the pinnacle of 19th-century botanical illustration, here rendered in large-format lithography that maintains the delicate tonal gradations of the original stipple engravings. KEY FEATURES +++ Content: Introductions by Eva Mannering in English, with technical botanical descriptions of each rose variety in French. +++ Scholarship: Includes historical context on Redouté?s transition from the court of Louis XVI to the Napoleonic era, emphasizing his role in the golden age of French botany. +++ Design: The large-scale format (16 inches) allows for a near-field study of Redouté?s botanical precision and artistic composition. SPECS: +++ Imprint: London; Ariel Press. 1954 (Roses) and 1956 (Roses 2). +++ Folio; 16 inches tall. +++ Visuals: 48 finely produced full-color offset lithographs (24 in each volume) selected from the original 1817-1824 engravings. +++ Binding: Quarter red morocco over red textured cloth by the renowned Bayntun of Bath. Features five raised spine bands, gilt-stamped titles, and stylized gilt roses in the compartments. Marbled endpapers. CONDITION: Very Good. +++ The Book: The bindings are firm and the hinges are strong. The interior is fine and bright, showing only occasional, minor finger marks to the margins. +++ The Binding: The morocco spine remains vibrant with bright gilt, though there is light rubbing to the head of the spine. The red cloth shows mild fading to the front board and a pale dampstain to the rear cloth which has not penetrated the text block. A handsome, unsophisticated example of mid-century fine binding. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE -- Pierre-Joseph Redouté was the preeminent botanical artist of the 19th century, serving as the official draughtsman to the Admiralty and the personal tutor to several French queens. His work on roses was revolutionary, moving beyond mere scientific recording to create high art that defined the aesthetic of the French Empire. These Ariel Press editions were instrumental in the mid-20th-century revival of interest in historical botanical art, utilizing superior color printing to mimic the depth of Redouté?s original hand-colored plates. The connection to Bayntun of Bath adds a secondary layer of bibliographical value. As one of the last great traditional binderies in England, Bayntun?s treatment of these folios elevated them from standard art books to library-grade collectibles. This volume stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the man who famously painted the gardens of Malmaison for Empress Joséphine, bridging the gap between scientific accuracy and the sublime. SUBJECTS: Botanical Art, Horticulture, Rose Varieties, French Empire Art, Malmaison, Fine Bindings, Bayntun of Bath, Fine Binding, First Edition, Folio, Illustrated Art Book.
