Buch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The Cambridge History of Libraries in Britain and Ireland describes the development of libraries in Great Britain and Ireland over some 1500 years, and their role as a part of the social, intellectual and cultural history. In addition to obvious links with the history of books and literature, the volumes include consideration of education, technology, social philosophy, architecture and the arts, as they have affected libraries. The significant international dimension, which has affected British and Irish libraries from the Middle Ages to the present, receives due attention. Other themes considered in each volume include the housing, storage and maintenance of books and other material; the individuals responsible for their care and those who used them; developments in provision, organization and cataloguing; and the principles and attitudes - of librarians and users - which such developments reflect.…

Laminated pictorial boards, 8vo, xii, 240 pp. From the publisher's description- "The present work is intended to describe two. related forms of lending organizations - circulating and subscription libraries - which were widespread for much of the second half of the eighteenth and most of the nineteenth centuries when the printed word was a primary medium of communication for transmitting knowledge, whether scientific or cultural. In the realm of lending books for home reading, Scotland played a leading role. Not only was the progenitor of the first Public Libraries Act a Scottish MP (though born in England, William Ewart, MP for Dumfries, was from Scottish stock), but the earliest successful British circulating and subscription libraries originated in Scotland, such as the libraries of Allan Ramsay (1725) in Edinburgh and John Smith (1753) in Glasgow, and the Kelso (1750), Hawick (1762), and Duns (1768) libraries; all lasted lor a hundred years or more." Contents include: Preface; Survey; Introduction and Background; The Beginnings of Circulating Libraries: Allan Ramsay; The Variety of 'Community' Libraries; The Earliest Subscription Libraries: Leadhills and Other Miners' Libraries; Kelso and the Borders: the First Proprietary Subscription Libraries; Subscription Libraries and Shares; The Growth of Circulating Libraries: the Capital City; The Spread of Circulating Libraries: Glasgow, the Provinces, and Overseas; The Business of Circulating Libraries; Workers' Libraries; Rules and Regulations; Stock Selection and Ordering; The Work of the Librarian; The Physical Form of Libraries; Religious and Children's Libraries; Special Libraries: Law, Foreign Books, Music; The Question of Book Clubs; Later History; Appendix I: Rules of the Montrose Library (178?); Appendix II: Size and Membership of Libraries: Statistical Survey; Table I: Number of Volumes In Selected Subscription Libraries 1790-19 Io; Table 2: Number of Members in Selected Subscription Libraries 1790-1910; Table 3: Number of Volumes in Selected Circulating Libraries 1770-1825; Table 4: Number of Titles in Selected Circulating Libraries 1770-1825; Index of Locations in Listing; Index to Survey.
