Hardcover. Condition: Very Good Plus. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Stated First Edition. Translated from the Serbo-Croatian by Ralph Manheim. As you can see from the photos the covers are in very nice shape. There really isn't any conspicuous wear. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely…tight pages, no binding issues. These pages are exceptionally clean. I'm scrolling through without finding any instances of soiling. Nor are there any turned-down corner creases or dogeared corners. I found only one thin crease off the outer edge of one page. There is some light dust staining on the middle and bottom page edges, but that has no impact on the actual pages. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. The dust jacket can be seen in the first few photos. It's very clean. There are a few lines of clouding resulting from the changeover in the fabric of the book (see fourth photo). The jacket doesn't have much wear, just a little spot at the bottom edge of the spine where the black peeled off. The flaps are in very solid shape. They are very clean. They do have some uniform toning. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. The novel is an homage to Bruno Schulz's "Sanatorium Under The Sign of The Hourglass" (first published in English in 1978). Schulz was a murder victim of the most arbitrary kind, shot in the street by a Nazi officer who wanted to kill someone else - but could not - because he was a fellow Nazi officer. The latter happened to admire and collect Schulz's drawings and so became his protector. In this "life-versus-death" game of one-upmanship, there was no possible way Schulz's Nazi protector could up the ante. Despite his talent, Schulz was just another Jew after all, inferior, sub-human. Kis' fictional re-creation of Schulz's pathetic life is one of the most sublime and moving gestures in literature. An absolute "must-have" title for Danilo Kis collectors. This title is a great book. This is one of very few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (American) still available online and is in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright.
