Paperback. Condition: Good. A Companion to the Iliad (1976) ? Malcolm M. Willcock (The University of Chicago Press) So you?ve decided to tackle Homer?s Iliad , that ancient war epic of gods, grudges, and guys who just won?t calm down. Good for you. But here?s the thing: it?s 15,693 lines long, half the characters have names like… ?Euphorbus,? and the other half are immortal troublemakers. That?s where Malcolm M. Willcock comes in. This companion isn?t the kind that steals your lunch or forgets your birthday ? it?s the kind that politely sits beside you, explaining the tricky bits, untangling the family trees, and pointing out that the ?wine-dark sea? isn?t actually about wine. First published in 1976, it?s an accessible, scholarly-but-not-snooty guide to Homer?s masterpiece, perfect whether you?re a student, a classics buff, or just someone who got lost looking for books about Brad Pitt?s Troy . Our copy? Well, it?s from Crappy Old Books , so expect the usual: a gently battered cover, a hint of that ?second-hand bookshop? aroma, and pages that have seen more than one bedtime read. But inside? Pure, undiluted Homeric wisdom ? without having to learn Ancient Greek.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Those who are able to read Homer in Greek have ample recourse to commentaries, but the vast majority who read the Iliad in translation have not been so well servedthe many available translations contain few, if any, notes. For these readers, Malcolm M. Willcock provides a line-by-line commen…tary that explains the many factual details, mythological allusions, and Homeric conventions that a student or general reader could not be expected to bring to an initial encounter with the Iliad. The notes, which always relate to particular lines in the text, have as their prime aim the simple, factual explanation of things the inexperienced reader would be unlikely to have at his or her command (What is a hecatomb? Who is Atreus' son?). Second, they enhance an appreciation of the Iliad by illuminating epic style, Homer's methods of composition, the structure of the work, and the characterization of the major heroes. The "Homeric Question," concerning the origin and authorship of the Iliad, is also discussed. Professor Willcock's commentary is based on Richmond Lattimore's translationregarded by many as the outstanding translation of the present generationbut it may be used profitably with other versions as well. This clearly written commentary, which includes an excellent select bibliography, will make one of the touchstones of Western literature accessible to a wider audience. Willcock provides a line-by-line commentary that explains allusions and Homeric conventions that a student or general reader could not be expected to bring to an initial encounter with the Iliad.
