Full red cloth boards decorated in gilt and blind pictorial design. Spines lettered in gilt. Blue pasted and free endpapers. , Major-General Sir Herbert Benjamin Edwardes KCB KCSI DCL (1819 ? 1868) was a British administrator, soldier, and statesman active in the Punjab region of British India. He is best known as the "Hero of Multan" for his pivotal role in securing British victory in the Second Anglo-Sikh War.Having been prevented from going up to Oxford by pressure from his guardians, Edwardes determined himself on a career in India. He applied directly to Sir Richard Jenkins, of Bicton Hall, Salop, a deputy chairman of the East India Company, formerly of the Bombay Civil Service, Member of Parliament for Shrewsbury in 1837, and family friend, for a cadetship in the Bengal Infantry. He landed at Calcutta early in 1841, aged 22, and from July 1842 served as a Second Lieutenant in the 1st Bengal European Regiment, first at Dinapore and then at Karnal, a frontier station. He remained with this regiment about five years, during which time he obtained a good knowledge of the Hindustani, Urdu and Persian languages, passing exams in all 3 subjects, which qualified him for the position of interpreter, which he obtained in November 1845, aged 26. He developed a deep understanding of military, political and social affairs in India, which showed itself in his many literary contributions to the Delhi Gazette entitled "Brahminee Bull's letters to his Cousin John Bull", expressing bold political opinions often critical of British Indian policy. His essays became well-read throughout British India and particularly impressed the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army himself, Sir Hugh Gough, who appointed Edwardes a member of his personal staff., Size : 8vo. Edwardes, who had arrived in India as a cadet in 1841, "raised a body of armed tribesmen, and rapidly formed a fairly disciplined and faithful force He routed the rebel troops at Kineyri and inflicted on the enemy a second defeat at Sadusam, in front of MultanYoung, alone, untrained in military science and unversed in active war, [Edwardes] had organized victory and rolled back rebellion" (DNB). "For his services he received the thanks of both houses of parliament, was promoted major by brevet, and created C.B. by special statute of the order After the conclusion of peace Major Edwardes returned to England and wrote and published his fascinating account of the scenes in which he had been engaged, under the title of A Year on the Punjab Frontier" (Britannica).

Contemporary full calf, rebacked, with the gilt logo of the Society of Writers to the Signet on all covers, small stain to lower corner of front board of Volume II; interiors excellent. First edition of Edwardes account of the Punjab Rebellion of 1848, also known as the second Anglo-Sikh War. Edwardes was appointed to the personal staff of Sir Hugh Gough, the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian army, whom he served during the first Anglo-Sikh War (1846-47). Thereafter the Punjab was ruled by a British Resident. With the stirrings of a second rebellion, Edwardes, despite any military training, raised a body of soldiers and defeated rebels loyal to a local Sikh leader. After numerous battles throughout the area, the local governor surrendered following negotiations with Edwardes. As a result of his deeds, he became quite famous and celebrated back in England. Edwardes (1819-1868) returned to the Punjab on a number of occasions, acting as a political appointee posed with the task of maintaining order in the area. For his role in securing the British victory during the War, he is known as the "Hero of Multan.".
