Come scrisse Agostino Perini, "l'amore che aveva per la patria grandissimo lo indusse a studiare la storia del suo paese, e formà una delle sue maggiori e pià care occupazioni". Frutto di queste ricerche fu il volume Periodi istorici e topografia delle Valli di Non e Sole nel Tirolo meridionale, pubblicato a Rovereto presso l'editore Marchesani nel 1805 e corredato di una carta geografica di Francesco Manfroni. Si tratta della prima organica trattazione dedicata alla storia delle valli del Noce, improntata al metodo storiografico muratoriano, cui segue una descrizione dei luoghi e delle loro caratteristiche fisiche e climatiche. Jacopo Antonio morà a Revà il 22 aprile dell'anno successivo. La sua opera principale à ritenuta "Periodi istorici e topografia delle Valli di Non e Sole nel Tirolo meridionale" che poniamo in vendita. Jacopo Antonio de Maffei nacque a Revà il 20 luglio 1745 da Giovanni, dottore in legge, e Maria Khuen. La famiglia paterna, originaria della Valtellina, era insignita di un titolo nobiliare imperiale e nel 1779 fu iscritta nella matricola nobiliare tirolese. Jacopo Antonio compà gli studi ginnasiali a Trento e a Merano per poi passare a Innsbruck, dove nel 1768 conseguà la laurea in filosofia. Nel Fondo Maffei dell'Archivio comunale di Revà si conservano il diploma di laurea, datato 20 agosto 1768, e la tesi Dissertatio de varia canonum collectionum apud Germanos fortuna stampata a Innsbruck l'anno successivo. Maffei continuà gli studi legali all'Università di Vienna, dove per breve tempo fu professore supplente di filosofia, ma l'infermità del padre lo costrinse a rientrare a Revà . Dal matrimonio con Marianna de Wiesenegg di Bolzano nacquero numerosi figli, tra i quali va ricordato Giovanni, che nel 1848 sarà eletto deputato all'Assemblea Costituente di Vienna. Dopo il suo ritorno in val di Non Jacopo Antonio si dedicà principalmente alla gestione delle vaste proprietà agricole di famiglia, anche se "richiesto dai suoi compatriotti od amici non rifiutavasi di fare il consulente legale", come ricordava Agostino Perini nella Statistica del Trentino. Il suo epistolario documenta che fu in cordiali rapporti con Carlo Antonio Martini, Carlo Antonio Pilati, Andreas Alois Di Pauli, Girolamo Asquini e con il futuro vescovo di Trento Emanuele Maria Thun. La partecipazione del Maffei alla vita intellettuale della regione à inoltre testimoniata dal suo ingresso nell'Accademia Roveretana degli Agiati con il nome di Ermondo, avvenuto il 7 aprile 1768. L'aspetto pià interessante della figura di Jacopo Antonio de Maffei à la sua passione per l'erudizione. A tale scopo egli radunà a Revà una biblioteca di tutto rispetto, che annoverava tra l'altro un magnifico atlante cinquecentesco e le opere dei maggiori intellettuali italiani del Settecento, da Ludovico Antonio Muratori a Scipione Maffei. La perla della sua raccolta era un incunabolo, reperito a Vienna dopo lunghe ricerche: un'edizione di Strabone stampata a Venezia nel 1494. La biblioteca di Casa Campia, principale residenza dei Maffei di Revà , andà purtroppo dispersa alla fine del XX secolo. Si à invece conservato l'archivio di famiglia, nel quale si trovano tra l'altro quattro volumi di "Stromati", raccolte di testi manoscritti e a stampa di vario argomento. Accanto agli studi storici Maffei coltivà un vivo interesse per l'epigrafia antica e moderna: si deve a lui la pubblicazione di numerose iscrizioni romane presenti in val di Non, tra le quali quella di Lucio Scantio Crescente, ritrovata a Revà nel 1789 durante lavori effettuati nella chiesa di Santo Stefano e fatta murare dallo stesso Maffei nel giardino della propria casa (il manufatto à oggi conservato nella chiesa parrocchiale di Revà ). Fu anche autore di numerose iscrizioni latine dettate in occasione di avvenimenti storici, come l'erezione del nuovo altare maggiore di Sanzeno (1771), la morte del principe vescovo di Passau Tommaso Thun (1796), la riscossa dei tirolesi sugli invasori francesi a Gargazzone (1796), la consacrazione della nuova curaziale di Tregiovo (1799), il soggiorno dell'arciduca Giovanni a Cles (1802).
