Oktober 1992 in Köln statt. Er war auf dem Weg von seinem Studio in New York zu dem in Madrid. Bereits sieben Jahre früher, im August 1985, hatten wir an seinem damaligen Wohnsitz ? Santa Cruz auf Teneriffa ? für die Kunstzeitschrift »Flash Art« ein Gespräch geführt.* Aber diesmal waren wir uns einig, weiter auszuholen, auch über Persönliches zu sprechen usw., um so vielleicht zu einem besseren »Gesamtbild« zu kommen. Zumindest mir lag an dem Versuch, einen einigermaßen dichten Hintergrund zu schaffen, vor dem Künstler und Werk sich deutlicher abheben würden. Ich gestehe, daß ich JGD in diesem Gespräch gern noch näher gekommen wäre, einiges gern noch tiefer ausgelotet hätte. Aber ich ahne auch, daß die Psyche, in die ich einzudringen wünschte, möglicherweise zu einem gut Teil eine Projektion meinerseits war. Und sicher haben gegenseitige Distanz und eine gewisse Liebe zur Dis- »Ironie ist doch auch immer ein Selbstschutz. Ironie, was heißt das? Es ist viel mehr, etwas anderes als ein Witz.
