She was a favorite of Louis XV but lost her head for what the Revolutionary government considered extravagant uses of state funds. VG and tight but with foxing on some beginning pages.

First edn. 8vo, pp. 381 + index and adv. Printed wraps in original tissue. A very good copy. Marie Jeanne Gomard de Vaubernier, Comtesse Du Barry (1741-93) was born the daughter of a dress maker and became a favorite of King Louis XV. Louis married her to the brother of her former protector for respectability's sake and her influence reigned supreme until his death in 1775. She was tried by the Revolutionary Tribunal for having wasted state money and was guillotined on December 6, 1793.
