Marie Jeanne Gomard de Vaubernier, Comtesse Du Barry (1741-93) was born the daughter of a dress maker and became a favorite of King Louis XV. Louis married her to the brother of her former protector for respectability's sake and her infl…uence reigned supreme until his death in 1775. She was tried by the Revolutionary Tribunal for having wasted state money and was guillotined on December 6, 1793.
