Paperback. Condition: Good. The author's reflections on the Kapiti coast, complemented by water colour illustrations. Of Kapiti, the island, Alistair Campbell wrote in 'Sanctuary of Spirits' from 'Kapiti, Selected Poems,' recalling the attempted invasion of Te Rauparaha's stronghold by other tribes: 'This island is alive with ghosts. Tonight every leaf is an ear.' Perhaps these spirits join with the birds and the listening leaves to make Kapiti a special place for the few visitors who cross the channel. And for those, the majority, who stay on the mainland, just having the island there is a special bonus. Reflections for the eye and for the mind. Fading on cover.

Octavius Hadfield (1814-1904) was an important figure in the early European settlement of NZ, particularly in the Otaki coastal area north-west of Wellington. While primarily a missionary he was also active and influential in civic affairs and among the Maori people, in times that were often troubled. He later became Bishop of Wellington where his good works, both eccleastical and secular, continued. In spite of his notable contribution to early settlement his role remained largely unrecorded until the author, his great grand-daughter, produced this excellent biography, which includes a large selection from his own letters and dairies. 203 pages including two appendices and index, seven b/w illustrations, photos/art. Green hard covers with gilt spine titles VG+, neatly inked name top FFEP, text block otherwise excellent. Colour art DJ VG with light brusing to spine base.
