This is intensely enjoyable and yet deceptive in the sense that their exuberant and relaxed alla…prima feel may conceal their complexity and intellectual seriousness. Their simplicity goes disturbingly together with an uncertainty of identification. What are we seeing?-Neither shapes, nor grounds, nor exactly figures, although the suggestions of all of these things are there. Very simple colour sensations feel like moments of release, clouds parting, or the lights being switched on in a room. The 'shapes that colour needs to become colour' cannot be defined or meet expectation because these colour shapes deliver their radiance and significance only in terms of the relationships that are discovered empirically within each individual painting."
