4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with discoloration from tape at head of second leaf. Watts's handwriting is not easily legible. The male recipient of the letter is not named. In reply to a letter received the previous Friday, Watts assures him that 'the earnest desire of Mrs. Watts and myself' is 'to promote by every means in our power the comfort and happiness of your daughter, and we are not without hope that we shall succeed in achieving what we wish.' Watts will be in London the following Thursday and Friday, 'and can, without the slightest inconvenience wait upon you in Trafalgar Square at any hour (morning or evening) that you may be the most likely to be disengaged'. He has 'promised to dine with the Royal Marines at Chatham on Saturday'. The letter ends with a discussion of the 'medium of conveyance' for certain 'articles of furniture', with Watts stating, 'I should wish Miss V. to bring any thing of the kind that she may desire to bring. There is not the shadow of an objection'. A line under the signature is illegible. "'Bokhara Burnes,' a relative of the Scottish poet Robert Burns, joined the East India Company as a teenager, and learned Hindustani and Persian while serving as an interpreter. He climbed the ladder in the Company and then in service of the British Army, eventually traveling through the Hindu Kush to modern-day Uzbekistan and Iran. He published a best-selling narrative of his journeys, 'Travels to Bokhara,' and was awarded a medal by the Royal Geographical Society. Burnes returned to India as a diplomat before precipitating colonial intrigue in Afghanistan as part of 'The Great Game,' where he was then assassinated prior to the first Anglo-Afghan War, but only after killing six assailants. 'Cabool,' a 'casual and informal account of life at Kabul,' in which Burnes gives 'geographical, agricultural, political, and linguistic information' that 'exceed usual interest' describes his second journey to Afghanistan from 1836-1838 and was posthumously published. Dickens conceived the work as a miscellany centered upon Master Humphrey and his circle, but it developed into the publication vehicle for the two novels. Ephemera laid in: a December 1920 newspaper clipping concerning Dickens's Christmas books and A Christmas Carol, together with a personal letter from a previous owner dated 1934.
