Christian Gottlob Heyne, der fast noch glimpflich davonkommt, empört sich gegenüber seinem Schwiegersohn Georg Forster (13. 1. 1792): Nicht nur keine Universität behielt ein Stäubchen Ehre, wenn es dem Verfasser des letzten Worts nachgieng; sondern es wäre gar keine Universität möglich . Wie der Mangel an feinem Geschmack und an feinem Gefühl sich bey so vielem Scharfsinn finden kan, ist unbegreiflich; der letztere ist aber unstreitig vom bösen Willen und von schwarzer Galle geschärft.`" (Nachwort von Ulrich Joost in der Neuausgabe von 1987. [] Der beifolgende Kunstdruck möchte Ihnen denselben zu erreichen wiederholen. Die Heimatliebe u. die Ehrung der Ueberlieferungen ihrer Stadt, welche die Bewohner Nördlingens erkennen lassen, haben meinem Glauben an die unfassbaren u. darum unverwüstlichen Kräfte unseres Volkes neuen Auftrieb verliehen. Solch betätigte Treue schafft Vaterlandsliebe. Ich habe in Nördlingen mich also an Altem u. Neuem erbaut, an der Stein gewordenen Vergangenheit u. an dem in seinen heutigen Bewohnern lebendigen Geist. ,Lieb' Vaterland magst ruhig sein' kam mir in den Sinn, Möchte der alte Soldat von 1870/71 u.
