Contact seller4-star sellerOctavo, burgundy cloth (hardcover), gilt lettering, map illus. endpapers, xxvi + 306 pp. Very Good in a Very Good, mylar protected dust jacket. From dust jacket: This is the story of General Robert L. Eichelberger, Eighth Army commander, who knew all that there was to know about the total strategy of an enormous theater, and yet… who spent much of the war within range of enemy mortar fire. He fought shoulder to shoulder with his own men within seventy-five feet of the Jap front line at Buna. He landed with his own first wave at Leyte and nearly outran his own 11th Airborne in its miraculous dash for Manila. He even strafed Jap defenders from his own B-17 in the Philippines. A typical day would find him at the front lines in the morning, lunching with MacArthur hundreds of miles away at noon, and back at his headquarters, poring over area maps with his staff, before supper. In the pages of this book he tells what it was like for a general to go patrolling with a tommygun; to work with a man of the brilliance -- and the personality of MacArthur; to command an army which set an all-time record for swift amphibious movement; to be one of a handful to enter Tokyo ahead of the troops and at a moment when the Jap surrender was merely a promise which had yet to be fulfilled. He throws light on the complicated problems of inter-Allied and inter-service cooperation. He explains the decision to attack the Philippines instead of bypassing them -- and describes the breathless wait for Roosevelt's ratification of that decision. And finally, he tells what it was like to be working boss of American Occupation Forces in Japan. Many of us think of the Pacific War as a series of sea and air battles and amphibious Marine actions. But from the bloody, sweating jungles of BUna, just across the way from Australia, to the avenues o f Yokohama, it was predominantly the Army's war; a war of divisions and corps and, most of all, of mud-spattered, dog-tired, fever-wracked, overloaded, underfed men who plodded through thousands of miles for three agonizing years. A part -- less than one-half -- of this fabulous adventures has been told in Saturday Evening Post articles. Now, in its full length, it stands as an almost incredible record of what really happened, because it is told by the man who went out and helped to do it himself. Military History, World War II, WWII, Second World War aslic.
