Magazine / Periodical
The Past Can Speak to the Present! It was 1916 and thousands of people were saying, "I've got to get myself in gear!" It didn't help matters much that World War I was in progress, or that Americans were worried about getting involved. But life rolled along and the cares of yesterday often reflected the cares of today. This magazine, "Personal Efficiency", addressed the desire for personal and public success . it was, in its own words, the "How and Why Magazine". While the editors and writers could hardly have imagined our daily use of the internet as a grand resource and tool, I warrant their approach to efficiency and their advice for personal success has much in it that is timeless. On the first page of the magazine is a black-and-white miniature reproduction of the front cover picture depicting a king pronouncing something to one of his vassals. The text on the page states : "An emperor born to the purple may be less kingly than the man who, through his own efforts, rises from low station to honorable attainment. ( Nature fashions both king and peasant from the same clay.)" On the rear exterior is an advertisement for REX Typewriters. TITLE : Personal Efficiency - The How and Why Magazine ISSUE : Volume 6, Number 6 DATE : June 1916 / EDITOR : Samuel MacClintock IMPRINT : La Salle Extension University PLACE : Chicago, Illinois STATUS : OP PHYSICAL DETAILS : Monthly Subscription Magazine; 32 pages; approximately 6 3/4" x 9 3/4", illustrated wraps, stapled (pictorial paper covers). The exterior as a drawing depicting a picture of a king and vassal. Rear cover has an ad for Rex Typewriters. The external cover and the insides of the cover are printed in shades of green. CONTENTS: ** Psychology in Business - by M. E. Power ** Signing the Business Letter - by H. P. Hermann ** Standard Practice Manuals - by William Bethke ** On the Job - by O. R. Marlin ** The Great Solomon Case - by R. C. Samsel ** Three Minute Personal Efficiency Biographies "Who Is He?" ** The Story of Joe Griesemer (Excerpted from a book titled "How to Get That Position", published in Reading PA by Handy Book Company) ** Efficiency Notes ** The Essentials of Credit (Excerpted from a book, "The Butler Way System Book" published by Butler Brothers) ** Alibi Alf - by Hugh Kahler (From "Wells Fargo Magazine") ** The Science of Getting a Raise - by Irving R, Allen ** Editorial ** Little Stories of LA Salle Successes ** On the Road to Power ** Our Humor Page ** Corner on Stenographers ** Some Little Efficiency Suggestions ** Numerous interesting period advertising. CONDITION - GOOD - This is a previously owned magazine which remains complete, clean and serviceable - with the following particulars noted: EXTERIOR : Moderate weathering, front and back; soft bumps to corner tips has some bumping to corner tips - with attendant creasing; spine displays abrasion along its length, and impact creasing and some surface loss around the foot. Displays nicely. BINDING : Staples display rust. The spine attachment to the main body of the magazine is a bit tenuous, as the staples are thinking about detaching (the attachment of the paper abutting the staples is iffy). However no leaves are detached or loose. INTERIOR : Creasing to fore-edge corner tips throughout, as well as at the foot of the spine gutter throughout. Else clean and presentable, with no marking, no writing, no signatures.
