This 1858 appeal gives not only an insight into the role of such libraries in local communities, but also the pressures such libraries were under to cater for the rapidly growing interest in reading in the face of the expansion of commercial lending libraries in the middle of the… nineteenth century. It is clear from the appeal that the library had been losing subscription members due to the ' great facilities afforded by the London Libraries of Mudie, and others, in supplying, the newest and best works to provincial Book Clubs and Reading Societies, of which several are existing in this neighbourhood.' In a clear case of ' if you can't beat them, join them ' the Committee of Management of the Library approached Mudie's and Messrs Saunders and Otley directly ' to supply this Library with the Best and Newest Publications.
