Ossip Zadkine (1890-1967) geniet in Nederland vooral bekendheid als de maker van het expressieve oorlogsmonument De verwoeste stad. Dit zes meter hoge beeld werd in 1953 aan de leuvehaven in Rotterdam geplaatst. Zadkine had na de oorlog een naam op te houden. Hij exposeerde veelvuldig in Europa, de Verenigde Staten en Japan. Op…de meeste tentoonstellingen liet de Frans-Russische kunstenaar gouaches zien. Deze kleurige 'schilderijen' zijn zelfstandige kunstwerken, niet bedoeld als voorstudie voor zijn beelden. Dit minder bekende, tweedimensionale oeuvre staat centraal in deze eerste publicatie waarin een overzicht wordt gegeven van Zadkines gouaches. De levenslustige onderwerpen en de frivole manier van werken imponeerden het cosmopolitische publiek van die tijd. In Nederland behoorde Maks tot de belangrijkste figuratieve kunstenaars. Hij was de enige leerling van George Hendrik Breitner en werd beïnvloed door Isaac Israëls. Dit boek vormt de eerste serieuze publicatie over de spraakmakende modernist Kees Maks en geeft een goed inzicht in het leven en werk van deze schilder van het mondaine leven.
