Hij was als docent verbonden aan het stedelijk gymnasium van Arnhem en aan de Koninklijke Militaire Academie te Breda. Ook was hij inspecteur van het lager onderwijs in Zuid-Holland. Hij publiceerde onder het pseudoniem "de oude heer Smits" in de Arnhemse Courant. In 1856 richtte hij het tijdschrift De Nederlandsche Spectator op. Samen met zijn vriend Lodewijk Mulder schreef hij in 1854 de bundel Afdrukken van indrukken. Uit de inhoud : Een Badienetje een Parapluie en een Speer door Mulder; Een arme Sukkel door den Ouden Heer Smits; De landziekige door Mulder, etc.

Hij heeft echter maar kort kunnen vlammen: in 1776 was deel I van 'Tristram Shandy' zijn eerste uitgeversactiviteit - hij was toen 21 jaar - en in 1783 viel waarschijnlijk al het doek.
