Full title: UNIVERSAL GEOGRAPHY, OR A DESCRIPTION OF ALL PARTS OF THE WORLD, ON A NEW PLAN, ACCORDING TO THE GREAT NATURAL DIVISIONS OF THE GLOBE; ACCOMPANIED WITH ANALYTICAL, SYNOPTICAL, AND ELEMENTARY TABLES. BY M. MALTE-BRUN. VOLUME VII. CONTAINING THE DESCRIPTION OF PRUSSIA, GERMANY, SWITZERLAND, AND ITALY. Collation as [fp], [missing blank prelims and i-ii with the latter being the title leaf, a facsimile of which is now laid-in], iii-xxviii, 1-774, [1st rear fly], [stubs for removed 2nd rear fly and rfep], [rp]. Hardcover: H 22.25cm x L 14cm. Original full brown leather; boards scuffed and rubbed with some staining and wear along edges particularly at corners; splitting along front joint but front board moderately pliable; shallow loss at spine head so that leather is somewhat even with text block's top edge; 2.75cm chip and scuffing/wear at spine heel with surface wrinkles/crinkling from dryness lengthwise; spine retains original maroon and black leather title labels with bright gilt stamping although with maroon title label having chip at top right corner adjacent to front joint. Spine's gilt stamped title lettering offers "Malte-Brun's | Geography" within top maroon label and "Europe | 7" within lower black label. Soiling and some stains to edges; pronounced exterior edge and interior toning to initial roman paginated leaves and pages 353 rearward as printer evidently changed paper stock (fairly typical of early 19th century American imprints but not usually seen in British editions). Antiquarian ink ownership signature upon front pastedown blotted and scratched out with similar old ink; illegible ink name stamp at top margin of page iii. Light to occasionally moderate foxing throughout. Text block remains firmly bound. Per the aforementioned missing title leaf, identifying this particular edition of UNIVERSAL GEOGRAPHY is difficult but, by consulting OCLC (unfortunately without Sabin to cross-reference) it seems that the majority of American editions were issued in either three or six volumes. The only apparent possibility for encompassing a Volume VII is the eight volume edition issued by Boston publisher/printer Wells and Lilly between 1824 and 1831 with their Volume VII being issued in 1829 and sharing a secondary imprint of New York's White, Gallaher and White. (The final Volume VIII was published Boston: Lilly and Wait as partner Thomas Wells died on December 31, 1829.) The corresponding 1829 Volume VII available via Google Books has a corresponding collation and shares matching text points randomly selected from a quick perusal and so, with this fairly certain attribution, a facsimile title page has been laid-in. "Contents of Vol. VII" exhaustingly listed on pages iii-xxviii followed by an abbreviated title upon page 1 as "System of Universal Geography. Book CXV. Europe." Text progresses as follows: Book CXV [Prussia] pages 1-33; Book CXVI [Germany] pages 34-59; Book CXVII [Germany] pages 60-156; Book CXVIII [Germany] pages 157-179; Book CXIX [Germany] pages 180-219; Book CXX [Germany] pages 220-263; Book CXXI [Germany] pages 264-323; Book CXXII [Germany] pages 324-358; Book CXXIII [Germany] pages 359-416; Book CXXIV [Germany] pages 417-436; Book CXXV [Germany] pages 437-468; Book CXXVI [Germany] pages 469-482; Book CXXVII [Germany] pages 483-509; Book CXXVIII [Germany] pages 510-526; Book CXXIX [Germany] pages 527-555; Book CXXX [Switzerland] pages 556-584; Book CXXXI [Italy] pages 585-610; Book CXXXII [Italy] pages 611-636; Book CXXXIII [Italy] pages 637-650; Book CXXXIV [Italy] pages 651-669; Book CXXXV [Italy] pages 670-693; Book CXXXVI [Italy] pages 694-774. No plates or maps present nor none called for within this volume although there are a number of tables present within the German and Italian sections. Sold as is. Please note that this thick book has an approximate shipping weight of 3 pounds (1.36 kg) and will require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail. {Shelf-AntiqBox09-#1}.
