In bygone years, books about gallstones were often based on postgraduate lectures which the author, usually a surgeon of distinc…tion, had given. More recently, many books dealing with this subject have been based upon national or international conferences. The single-author text has the disadvantage that few authors today can authoritatively encompass a whole field: the reports of symposia, conferences or workshops often lack balance and auth ority. The merits of 'Gallstone disease and its Management' edited by Malcolm Bateson are clear. He has chosen 11 authors, all of whom write on topics relating to their own expertise, and the content of the book has been carefully planned to reflect the most modern ideas about the aetiology and management of cholesterol gallstones. It is worth repeating that we are experiencing rapid developments in the field of gallstone disease. Disappointingly the least progress has been made in identifying the cause (or causes) of the disease notwithstanding the many data implicating a variety of environmental factors. Most of these affect the chemistry of hepatic bile and the contribution of the gallbladder to lithogenesis remains uncertain and unstudied.

Fino a pochi anni fa la linguistica riconosceva resistenza di due ordini di fenomeni che non riusciva però a mettere in forma. Da un lato l'universo dei gesti, delle posizioni corporali, delle comunicazioni mimiche, che contribuiscono indubbiamente a sottolineare i significati trasmessi attraverso il linguaggio verbale e che spesso acquistano funzione comunicativa autonoma. Dall'altro l'universo delle intonazioni, delle inflessioni di voce, delle sottolineature emotive che possono cambiare radicalmente il significato di una parola o di una frase. La linguistica lasciava lo studio del primo tipo di fenomeni alla antropologia culturale, intesa a scoprire tutte le forme di comportamento istituzionalizzato all'interno delle varie culture; oppure alla medicina e alla psichiatria, che dal comportamento gestuale, mimico, corporale del paziente traggono preziose indicazioni diagnostiche. E catalogava il secondo tipo di fenomeni tra ì cosiddetti tratti sovrasegmentali, difficilmente articolabili, rotabili in sistema, ritenuti espressivi, naturali, non arbitrari e comunque non convenzionalizzati. Oggi la cinesica e la paralinguistica, che studiano appunto questi due ordini di fenomeni, entrano a buon diritto nel panorama degli studi sentiotici e stanno raggiungendo alti livelli di formalizzazione. William Bateson (1861-1926) was an English biologist and evolutionary theorist who was best known for rediscovering and defending the genetic paradigm of Gregor Mendel. Bateson first used the term 'genetics' to refer to the study of heredity. These reports cover the seminal research conducted by Bateson. "The rediscovery of Mendel's work transformed Bateson's career. He reinterpreted experimental data already available in Mendelian terms. As spokesman for the new discipline, Bateson knew no peer, yet his work was financed with great difficulty. The reports to the evolution committee of the Royal Society were the main vehicle of Mendelian publication in Britain until 1910" (DSB).The work is rare in this combined state and represents a foundational document in the early history of genetics. It stands as a key primary source for the study of early twentieth-century biology, marking the institutional and intellectual consolidation of genetics as a modern science.
