Während sie in der ersten Auflage nur am Rande zu Wort kam, wurden ihr in der zweiten Auflage bereits wichtige Kapitel… gewidmet. In dem vorliegenden Band wird nun ein Schritt weiter getan: sie erhält noch mehr Eigenständigkeit und Profil. Daß es den Herausgebern gelang, kompetente Mitarbeiter zu gewinnen, deren wissenschaftliche Tätigkeit ausdrücklich auf die Gerontopsychiatrie ausgerichtet ist, spricht ebenfalls für die rapiden Fortschritte auf diesem Gebiet und für dessen Ausweitung. Wer hätte zu Zeiten Kraepelins und Bleulers geahnt, daß die Alterspsychiatrie einen immer breiteren Platz einnehmen würde? Ist aus dem Stiefkind ein Kronprinz geworden? Die Zukunft wird es zeigen. Die Herausgeber haben sich bemüht, alle wichtigen Teilaspekte zu berücksichtigen. Trotzdem werden manche Leser vielleicht ein spezielles Kapitel über Psychopathologie im engeren, klinischen Sinne vermissen; dies war aus mancherlei organisatorischen Gründen nicht möglich. Auch zur Gewichtung der einzelnen Beiträge mögen Einwände auftauchen. Insgesamt aber wird dieser Band dem jungen Psychiater wie dem erfahrenen Kliniker einen fundierten Überblick über die Gesamtproblematik geben und die vorherrschenden Tendenzen aufzeigen.
