First edition first impression 2001. 192 pages. Illustrated maninly in colour throughout, some black and white. Cloth. Near fine in dustjacket. Hailed as the British counterparts to Charles and Ray Eames, Robin and Lucienne Day electrified the British design scene in the 1950s with their startling furniture and textile designs. Indeed, their influence over the next five decades has been so profound that their early products were recently reintroduced by Conran's Habitat. Lucienne Day pioneered the introduction of modern abstract pattern design in the textile industry. Her fabrics, which oscillate between bold geometric figures and more subtle abstract patterns, were produced by companies as diverse as Heal's and Liberty of London. Robin Day's influential furniture designs pioneered the use of materials such as plywood, steel, and plastic. His stacking polypropylene chair (right) is one of the best-selling chairs in the world. Robin and Lucienne Day, the first-ever full-length monograph on their designs, features never-before-seen archival material along with over 250 color images of the full range of their work, including furniture, ceramics, textiles, wallpaper, interiors, appliances, exhibit designs, and graphics. Spanning a half-century's creative output, no designer will fail to be awed by the genius seen in this book. We are specialists in Artists Monographs, Catalogues and Illustrated items. Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Tall quarto (228mm x 317mm), unpaginated [30pp.], illustrated. Black leather album with 15 leaves, with all rectos and versos used. 9 numbered pages, with 52 mounted cloth samples on 16 pages. A curious and well-illustrated bound typescript--really a handmade book--possibly a student project, which consists of a survey of the state of textile design in postwar Britain. Though certainly a study of the field, it's also a kind of manifesto, as the author makes their opinions known. For example, "Simplicity as well as suitability is also the basis of good design. Designs which are clutteed and over-worked are never good. It is clearly seen in the examples opposite that simple spots and stripe designs are the most satisfying." Though the captions for the various textile samples are short and generally do not identify the artist, the text clearly identifies the work of Lucienne Day and David Whitehead, whose samples are havily represented as "good" examples of modern textile design. The author makes it clear that, in so many words, the "establishment" of British textile manufacturers of the period were clinging desperately to Victorian-style designs, elaborate floral prints, and the like, while the more whimsical, stylized forms offered by Day and Whitehead were the clear path forward. Condition: gutter exposed in a few places, but structurally sound, some rubbing and scuffing to board edges, and a faint general mustiness internally, but a clean, very good example. Some glued elements loosened, but nothing missing or in danger of disappearing.
