He was promoted to curator from 1893 and served in that capacity until 1904. From 1904 to 1911, he was the curator-in-chief at the Museum of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences. From 1911-1923, he was director of the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Among his books are ANIMALS OF THE PAST (1901) and ANIMALS BEFORE MAN IN NORTH AMERICA (1902).
