Head-and-foot of the spine as well as the corners are mildly bumped. Binding is square and tight. Cloth and stamping is bright. Orange and green illustrated DJ of a crowd of different groups of people, with black lettering on the front cover and spine. DJ is missing pieces along the cover edges and is a bit sun faded along the spine, but the front cover remains bold. DJ is placed in a protective plastic brodart. Black-and-white illustrated frontispiece of an older woman and child titled "The Village Shop". No date on title page. Copyright page is dated 1925, with a letter "B" below the title. 93 pages. Illustrations by Ernest H. Shepard on every page alongside the poems and prose by E. V. Lucas. Interiors are clean and free from marks or tears. A good copy.

There are some rubs and bumping to the extremities. A dust wrapper is not called for. There is a small neat inscription to the f.e.p. and there is a repair to pp13. This collection of forty six short verses for children is very much in the style of A. A. Milne's first collection of verses 'When We Were Very Young' which was published by Methuen just a year before in 1924. In that same year Lucas was appointed Chairman of Methuen & Co and it was he who introduced Milne, a fellow writer for Punch magazine, to Ernest H. Shepard, the rest, as they say, is history. Published in Association with the proprietors of "Punch." Printed in Great Britain. From the Notes to the Verses and Pictures - The verses and pictures in this book appeared in Punch in 1926-28 and are collected by the kind permission of the proprietors of that paper. The notes then go on to provide a bit of background information on the contents of the material for each county. Edward Verrall Lucas, (1868 - 1938) was an English humorist, essayist, playwright, biographer, publisher, poet, novelist, short story writer and editor. Lucas joined the staff of the humorous magazine Punch in 1904, and remained there for the rest of his life. He was a prolific writer, most celebrated for his short essays, but he also produced verses, novels and plays. From 1908 to 1924 Lucas combined his work as a writer with that of publisher's reader for Methuen and Co. In 1924 he was appointed chairman of the company. Ernest Howard Shepard OBE MC (1879 - 1976) was an English artist and book illustrator. He is known especially for illustrations of the anthropomorphic animal and soft toy characters in The Wind in the Willows and Winnie-the-Pooh. Throughout his military service in WWI , he had been contributing to Punch. He was hired as a regular staff cartoonist in 1921 and became lead cartoonist in 1945. This very large book, 92 pages, is in very-good condition. It is a sturdy, well-made book but is missing the dust jacket. The illustrations are delightful.

This copy is in very good unmarked condition. bound in half linen to grey paper covered boards with a white title panel to the front which has some spotting. There is some offsetting to the endpapers typical in a book of this antiquity but the text block is bright, tight and clean. a lovely copy of a scarce book. The verses and pictures in this book first appeared in 'Punch' magazine. Edward Verrall Lucas, CH (11/12 June 1868 - 26 June 1938) was an English humourist, essayist, playwright, biographer and publisher. Born to a Quaker family on the fringes of London, Lucas began work at the age of sixteen, apprenticed to a bookseller. After that he turned to journalism, and worked on a local paper in Brighton and then on a London evening paper. He was commissioned to write a biography of Bernard Barton, the Quaker poet. This led to further commissions, including the editing of the works of Charles Lamb. Lucas joined the staff of the humorous magazine Punch in 1904, and remained there for the rest of his life. He was a prolific writer, most celebrated for his short essays, but he also produced verses, novels and plays. From 1908 to 1924 Lucas combined his work as a writer with that of publisher's reader for Methuen and Co. In 1924 he was appointed chairman of the company. In 1904, while in the middle of his work on Lamb, he joined the staff of Punch, remaining there for more than thirty years. Lucas introduced his Punch colleague A A Milne to the illustrator E H Shepard with whom Milne collaborated on two collections of verse and the two Winnie-the-Pooh books. It is little wonder therefore that Lucas should combine his talents with Shepard's on several books for children and this satirical look at the counties and people of the English counties. This book reinforces the fact that Shepard was one of our finest draughtsmen when it came to pen and ink illustration. Ref Z1.
