Die von Cauchy 1814 begründete Theorie der Funktionen einer komplexen Variablen z = x + yi untersucht die Eigenschaften einer Funktion J(z) = u(x, y) - v(x, y)i, um ihren analytischen Charak…ter und die Darstellung durch Potenzreihen zu erfassen. Während Cauchy für seine Argumentation die Existenz und Stetigkeit der Ableitung J'(z) benötigte, zeigte Goursat 1900, dass auf die Stetigkeit verzichtet werden kann. In der vorliegenden Schrift wird auch die Existenz von J'(z) hinterfragt und durch eine schwächere, aber notwendige Beziehung zwischen u und v ersetzt, um u + vi als analytische Funktion von z zu definieren. Dies erfüllt den Wunsch von Bolza, der 1912 in London mit Hilbert über die Reduzierung der Voraussetzungen für die Existenz von J'(z) sprach. Diese umfassende Entwicklung ist nun bereit für eine einheitliche, eigenständige Darstellung, die auch die Geschichte der Funktionentheorie umfasst. Die einzelnen Schritte, insbesondere der letzte, werden hier angemessen behandelt. Zudem wird der für Physik und Technik wichtige Begriff des reellen und komplexen Kurvenintegrals berücksichtigt, da er in älteren Arbeiten über den "Cauchyschen Integralsatz" eine zentrale Rolle spielt. Die Definition solcher Integrale, mit der wir beginnen, ist daher wesentlich für die Grundlage der Funktionentheorie.
