"An exceptional copy of this seminal Enlightenment urban planning work, uniquely preserving both the 1755 Permission and 1756 Privilége du Roi variant title pages bound into the first volume. This rare composite configuration offers a unique bibliographical timel…ine of the book's evolution from a provisional printing permit to official royal backing." 8vo.2 volumes, from 3. (2), xiv pp, (15)-239 pp, (1); 224 pp; Tome I, 2 title pages, 2 different dates 1750 & 1751. The two volumes are bound in contemporary 18th-century mottled calfskin. The covers feature an exceptionally fine and wide gilt-tooled dentelle border [3] framing the edges with intricate lace-like scrollwork, floral motifs, and corner flourishes. The outer rims of the boards are decorated with a delicate gilt geometric roll, and the inner edges (turn-ins) are finished with internal gilt dentelles. The edges of the text block are fully gilt (tranches dorées), and the volumes retain their original vibrant marbled endpapers. The author arranged for the present work to be printed in a most striking manner, with each pages verso left blank, so that his enlightened reader might make their own notes and observations on his proposals. Tightly bound, pages are mostly extremely fine. Some pages have light foxing, see the last two images. Pages 145 to 168 in v lI are a darker paper, see images. Please view the photographs for more information. Registered postage. Tracking details will be forwarded to the purchaser.
