The nineteen papers collected in this volume were delivered at a symposium held in Toronto, November 1989 in order to discuss the art and culture of Timurid times. The papers cover the last decades of the fourteenth century and the whole of the fifteenth, in an area of western Asia extending roughly from the Euphrates to the Hindu Kush and to the Altai. Among the subjects covered were: 'Discourses of an Imaginary Arts Council in Fifteenth-Century Iran'; 'The Persian Court between Palace and Tent: From Timur to 'Abbas I'; 'Turkmen Princes and Religious Dignitaries: A Sketch in Group Profiles'; 'Craftsmen and Guild Life in Samarkand'; 'The Baburnama and the Tarikh-i Rashidi: Their Mutual Relationship'; 'Geometric Design in Timurid/Turkmen Architectural Practice: Thoughts on a Recently Discovered Scroll and Its Late Gothic Parallels' and 'Repetition of Compositions in Manuscripts: The Khamsa of Nizami in Leningrad.

English text.; Hardcover (with dust jacket).; 23 x 29 cm.; 1.2 kg.; 256 pages with black and white and a few colour illustrations.; Used with minor signs of wear on the exterior and interior. Minor edge wear.; slamic Art and Architecture Series: Number 6.; The practice of imitating Chinese blue-and- white porcelain in Iran began in the Timurid period (c. 1370-1505). In 1949, Sir Basil Gray wrote, "we do not unfortunately know much more about this period of Persian pottery and it remains notoriously elusive." Attempts to distinguish wares actually made in Iran during the 15th century failed because they depended on analysis of the decoration alone. Idiosyncrasies of individual workshops could not be distinguished, and the dates of Chinese models could serve only as broad guidelines. The new approach, which is fundamental to this study, is petrographic analysis. This technique, derived from the earth sciences, is used to characterize production centres on the basis of the presence and nature of minerals and rock inclusions found within the body. As this particular pottery is made of stonepaste, which is primarily composed of quartz, new criteria for characterization were developed specifically for this research. By analysis of materials from kilns and other evidence of manufacture, it is possible to characterize a centre of production, and at times even distinguish separate workshops in the same centre. Analysis of whole objects enables their attribution to these defined centres, and allows stylistic characterization of each centre. One of the most important findings of this study was the identification of Nishapur in northeastern Iran as a major production centre. The work begins by introducing the problem and discussing the stimulus, the Chinese porcelain trade. It then addresses the local response, first from the "inside" (petrographic analysis) and then from the "outside," classifying ornament on the basis of its Chinese model. The workshops are then identified and dated on the basis of stylistic and technical characteristics. This information is woven into the historical narrative, and a chronology of the ceramic industry is proposed. Finally, the authors comment broadly on the industry in the Timurid period and consider Timurid pottery within the larger context of Islamic ceramics.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Toward the end of the nineteenth century much of Iran's architectural heritage gave way to urban development. Among the casualties were the seventeenth-century Safavid palaces of Isfahan. Local dealers salvaged a series of astonishingly beautiful pictorial arch-shaped panels composed of cuerda seca tiles from one of these. Beginning in 1911 whole panels and many single tiles were sold through Hagop Kevorkian. The authors have assembled (digitally) 36 friezes once part of this set.The iconographic program consisted of three themes: secular pastimes (picnics, hunt, games), Persian literary episodes, and religious festivals (e.g., the Ashura). The first two themes have a long history in Iranian mural painting, but the third was new and will be of interest to cultural historians. The friezes are stylistically datable to c. 1685-95. One clue to the identity of the original site is the duplication of almost all the friezes. The authors deduce that the scenes were paired across a courtyard and suggest three possible sites. Fully assembled, the suite emerges as a hitherto unknown, outstanding creation that should be added to the canon of Safavid art. Assembled digitally from worldwide collections, this Arcade of 36 colourful tile panels exposes for the first time religious themes as well as more traditional themes for architectural decoration, and adds a new work to the canon of seventeenth-century Persian art. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Persian Pottery in the First Global Age: the Sixteenth and Seventeeth Centuries studies the ceramic industry of Iran in the Safavid period (1501-1732) and the impact which the influx of Chinese blue-and-white porcelain, heightened by the activities of the English and Dutch East Indies Companies after c. 1700, had on local production. The multidisciplinary approach of the authors (Lisa Golombek, Robert B. Mason, Patricia Proctor, Eileen Reilly) leads to a reconstruction of the narrative about Safavid pottery and revises commonly accepted notions. The book includes easily accessible reference charts to assist in dating and provenancing Safavid pottery on the basis of diagnostic motifs, potters' marks, petrofabrics, shapes, and Chinese models.
