Internationally renowned, medaled, and financially independent, the practice of art was no longer a necessity but a labor of lovelucrative, to be sure, but self-satisfying and all absorbing. It is this Delacroixmature and apparently serene and dispassionatewho has become better known and more clearly defined through the recent exhibition and catalogue Delacroix: The Late Work. . The exhibition was one of several that marked the bicentennial of the birth of the artist in 1798, and the only one that was seen in this country. Organized jointly by the Réunion des Musées Nationaux and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, it comprised some one hundred and fifty paintings, drawings, and watercolors dating from about 1850 to the artist's death in 1863.

Certains de ses portraits les plus célèbres montrent les figures de Mao Zedong, Bruce Lee et Barack Obama. Outre et contre ces personnalités, les portraits de Pei-Mings s'étendent aussi à ceux de son père et de lui-même. A l'âge de 19 ans, Yan Pei-Ming décide de s'installer en France, où il s'inscrit à la célèbre École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Dijon. Il a terminé ses études en 1986 et a connu un succès rapide grâce à son uvre expressive, dominée par le portrait. Ses tableaux sont exécutés avec énergie et imagination, composés de coups de pinceau expressifs et d'une palette principalement monochrome avec parfois du rouge foncé. En 2003, il a obtenu une reconnaissance internationale à la Biennale de Venise. Six ans plus tard, son uvre est acquise par le Louvre, où il expose une collection de portraits destinés à transmettre sa perspective personnelle sur la Joconde de Léonard de Vinci.
