With volume listing; black and white frontispiece of Gesner; black and white vignette title page; 2 further title pages; Publisher's advert (not…ing that this volume was produced 'early' - Marsupials had been due to be the next volume published); Memoir of Gesner; Introduction with black and white illustrations; text including synopsis and memorandum; and 33 plates bound at the rear. Of these 30 are hand coloured - the other 3 are a copy of a bas relief (numbered as Plate A), a skeletal view, and a muscular view. The plates are numbered to 31, but there are 2 versions of Plate 10. The cloth binding is in clean sound condition, having been rebacked preserving the original spine. The spine and board edges are faded but the gilt titles are clear. There is a pale line on the front board and the back board is mottled towards the top corner. The original green endpapers are present with professional repair at the joints. The contents are clean. The text pages are toned and many are unopened. The plates are very well coloured. The tissue guards have offsetting and some spotting. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images. Hamilton-Smith and Stewart (illustrator).

Steevens, and edited by his son Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel Steevens. Published by Warren and Son in 1878.In the decorative publisher's original red cloth, with a frontispiece of Steevens.Serving during a period when Britain were heavily involved within the Napoleonic Wars, and Steevens was particularly active in the Peninsular War, fighting at Roncesvalles. A retrospective account written years after his service, Steevens's inclusion are noteworthy for the intriguing insights that an officer remembers long after their service, including on fellow officers and combat decision-making. In the decorative publisher's original red cloth. Externally, smart, with faint fading marks to the spine and joints, and minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. Black end papers are clean, with minor fading spots to rear end paper extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with faint spotting to verso of blank and frontispiece. Author describes 2 crossings (winter & summer) of the Andes in the vicinity of Aconcagua between Santiago, Chile & Mendoza, Argentina. Two of the plates show: 1) people climbing snow peak and 2) glissading in the mountains.
