Paperback. Condition: Fine. 1st. 143 pages, illustrations (some colour); 30 cm. Catalogue of a touring exhibition held at the University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, Berkeley, California and three other institutions between April 2, 2003 and August 22, 2004. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Profusely illustrated. *** "Born in 1942, Paul Kos has been a highly influential artist in the Bay Area for well over three decades. In the late 1960s and early 1970s he was one of the major figures on the early Conceptual art scene, notable especially for his early experimental video works and seemingly simple but technically innovative sculptural installations, which generally featured evocative audio or video components. He was one of the first to incorporate video into interactive installations. The artist's best-known work is arguably the sublime 'Chartres Bleu,' a 1986 video installation that re-creates in full scale a stained-glass window from the Chartres cathedral in France. Each of the 27 vertically stacked video monitors duplicates an individual leaded glass panel. The brightness of the images stimulates the light changes in a normal day, accelerated to 12 minutes. Depending on the light, the narrative scenes are clearly readable or, when brightly illuminated, dissolved into abstractness. Everything Matters, published on the occasion of an exhibition of Kos's work at the Berkeley Art Museum, is the first major volume on his work." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: Paul Kos: an annotated chronology, by Constance M. Lewallen; Belief, by Charles Desmarais; Ice-as-ice is art-as-art, by Ron Meyers; Public art: "to make happy people sad and sad people happy", by Rachel M. Teagle. Size: 4to. Collectible.

Foreword by Jock Reynolds. Introduction by John Ashbery. 6 x 8. Illustrations: 25-35 color illustrations, 50 b/w photographs. 120 pages. hardcover. keywords: Art. DESCRIPTION - 500 Capp Street tells the story of David Ireland's house, a rundown Victorian in the Mission District of San Francisco that the artist transformed into an environmental artwork, taking the detritus of his restoration labors as well as objects left behind by previous owners and refashioning them into sculptures. Author Constance M. Lewallen begins by recounting the history of the house from 1886, when it was built, until Ireland acquired it in 1975. She then details Ireland's renovation and continuing engagement with the site that served simultaneously as his residence, studio, and evolving artwork; the house's influence on his own work and that of artists who followed him; and its relationship to other house museums. An introduction by Jock Reynolds, who was close to the artist for many years, chronicles the social scene that developed around 500 Capp Street in the 1980s. The book also includes a 1983 article on the house by renowned poet John Ashbery. Illustrated with a generous selection of photographs taken over the years by the artist and his many visitors, this is an invaluable and intimate record of Ireland's best-known work. 500 Capp Street is essential reading for anyone interested in the artistic and cultural history of the San Francisco Bay Area and the California conceptual art movement. inventory #41692 Very Good in Pictorial Hardcover Boards. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In her radical exploration of cultural and personal identity, the writer and artist Theresa Hak Kyung Cha sought the roots of language before it is born on the tip of the tongue. Her first book, the highly original postmodern text Dictee, is now an internationally studied work of autobiography. This volume, spanning the period between 1976 and 1982, brings together Chas previously uncollected writings and text-based pieces with images. Exilee and Temps Morts are two related poem sequences that explore themes of language, memory, displacement, and alienationissues that continue to resonate with artists today. Back in print with a new cover, this stunning selection of Chas works gives readers a fuller view of a major figure in late twentieth-century art.
