Paperback. Condition: New. Representing the highest quality of scholarship, Gilles Emery offers a much-anticipated introduction to Catholic doctrine on the Trinity. His extensive research combined with lucid prose provides readers a resource to better understand the foundations of Trinitarian reflection. The book is addressed to all who wish to benefit from an initiation to Trinitarian doctrine. The path proposed by this introductory work comprises six steps. First the book indicates some liturgical and biblical ways for entering into Trinitarian faith. It then presents the revelation of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in the New Testament, by inviting the reader to reflect upon the signification of the word "God." Next it explores the confessions of Trinitarian faith, from the New Testament itself to the Creed of Constantinople, on which it offers a commentary. By emphasizing the Christian culture inherited from the fourth-century Fathers of the Church, the book presents the fundamental principles of Trinitarian doctrine, which find their summit in the Christian notion of "person."On these foundations, the heart of the book is a synthetic exposition of the persons of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit in their divine being and mutual relations, and in their action for us. Finally, the last step takes up again the study of the creative and saving action of the Trinity: the book concludes with a doctrinal exposition of the "missions" of the Son and Holy Spirit, that is, the salvific sending of the Son and Holy Spirit that leads humankind to the contemplation of the Father.…

Hardback. Condition: New. Examines Joseph Ratzinger/Pope Benedict XVI's manifold contributions to Catholic-Protestant theological reflection. The collection opens with an introduction comparing Ratzinger's approach to ecumenism to that of Karl Rahner. Rahner argues that the structural uniting of Protestants and Catholics should take place now without worrying about doctrinal differences. In contrast, Ratzinger argues that unity in Christ requires probing the doctrinal differences and seeking a deeper understanding of the reasoning of each side - on the grounds that the truth of the Gospel that each side desires to preserve will ultimately be the basis for the only kind of Christian ecclesial unity worth having, namely, a unity of the basis of the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.Detailed essays follow, treating a number of loci including papal primacy, ecumenical principles, liturgy, evangelization, Mariology, Christ's birth and the celebration of Christmas, public theology, Christocentrism, Martin Luther, charity, conscience, missiology, justification, the reception of Ratzinger/Benedict in Radical Orthodoxy, and Scripture and Tradition. These essays run the full gamut of Ratzinger/Benedict's major themes and preoccupations.Ten of the essays are by Catholic scholars, and seven by Protestant scholars. Contributors include many of the world's leading Ratzinger experts, and the volume opens with an essay by Bishop Rudolf Voderholzer, Director of the Pope Benedict XVI Institute in Regensburg, Germany.…

Hardback. Condition: New. This book brings the thought of John Henry Newman into conversation with that of Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI on a number of crucial theological themes. The book begins with a programmatic essay by Tracey Rowland connecting Newman's approach with that of Ratzinger's doktorvater Gottlieb Söhngen, along seven instructive paths. The book then delves into central themes of both Newman's and Ratzinger's thought, with essays that treat dogmatic development, the relationship of faith and reason, biblical inspiration, mystery, conscience, attentiveness to the "signs of the times," interculturality and revelation, the Church as the Mystical Body, ecclesial authority, the relationship of faith and natural science, and deification. The essays in the volume come from many of the world's leading Newman and Ratzinger scholars, with Ratzinger being represented by such experts as Rowland, Emery de Gaál, Aaron Pidel, SJ, Jacob Phillips, Matthew Ramage, and Jeremy Pilch; and Newman by such experts as Frederick D. Aquino, Andrew Meszaros, Marial Corona, Ryan Marr, and Elizabeth A. Huddleston. The Introduction briefly sets the scene for the encounter by describing the German reception of Newman during Ratzinger's youth in comparison with the much less robust situation in German Newman scholarship today. It is the hope of the editors that this theological encounter will serve to promote and advance both Newman studies and Ratzinger studies in English- and German-speaking lands today.…
