Le sujet de la Vierge Sarrasine, c'est celui d'un conte enfantin ou d'une légende populaire. Mais de quelle grâce ne la pare pas le style fluide et irrépr…ochable de M Jules Lemaitre! Aussi bien, il serait oiseux de commenter ces quelques lignes où la langue, maniée par le plus subtil virtuose de la plume, atteint à la suprème perfection. Ce récit naïf et raffiné tour à la fois, M Gustav Adolf Mossa l'a illustré d'images précieuses comme des miniatures de missel. Il s'est appliqué à retrouver la ferveur des vieux enlumineurs dans celles de ces illustrations que montrent l'imagier à l'oeuvre et la blonde Toinon en prière, parmi les fleurs virginales du sanctuaire. Au contraire, pour représenter la dame sarrasine recevant, dans un cadre indécis, l'hommage du croisé franc, impatient devant la symbolique grenade des tentations, son pinceau a retrouvé les minuties d'un Gustave Moreau cherchant a faire revivre les gràces preverses d'une Hérodiade ou d'une Circé.
