Ghouls, goblins, mummies, vampires, werewolves, zombies; mind-bending flights of fancy, apocalyptic visions of the future, electrifying jolts of supernatural fright, twisted glimpses of warped imagination. For most of the twentieth century, the film genre that has come to be known as "horror, fantasy, and science fiction" has produced not only the biggest thrills and chills but some of the greatest poster art ever. From seminal works such as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1919) and The Phantom of the Opera (1925) to such classics as Dracula (1931) and Frankenstein (1931); from the cult "B" films of the Fifties through great Sixties blockbusters such as Psycho (1960), Planet of the Apes (1968), and Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), the art created to promote these beloved films--some of which are cinematic classics, others second-rate curiosities--shines on long after the last flickering image has died on-screen. Ronald V. Bost has amassed nearly six decades worth of vintage film memorabilia, and in this book he reveals his extraordinary collection. As accompaniment, seven legendary authors of the fantastic offer their wit and wisdom. The book features more than 500 of the finest vintage film posters (and related memorabilia).

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good+. First Edition; First Printing. SIGNED EDITION. This copy has been signed Ronald V. Borst (who collected the images) and Forrest J. Ackerman, with a short inscription. The book is in Near Fine condition and has a Very Good+ dust jacket. The book is in clean, bright condition. There is a bit of light bumping to the top edge of the book cover. The text pages are clean and bright. The price clipped dust jacket is mostly clean and bright. "By the time he was an adult in the mid-1970s, Borst had built up a decent collection of movie memorabilia for a guy living back east. But another visit to Hollywood kicked his habit into high gear. While Borst was making $8,000 a year (before taxes) teaching Third Grade in Pennsylvania, Edmundsâ shop displayed an original, 1931 âFrankensteinâ poster in its window. Mainly to lure customers into the store, an outrageous asking price of $1,000 was attached to it, with no expectation anyone would pay that outrageous amount for a picture of Boris Karloff. Borst took out a loan â" at 40% interest. He had to lie to the lender that he needed the money for stereo equipment and furniture. He still has the poster, now valued in the six figures, in his personal collection. Soon after that, a local collector named Robert Scherl suggested he and Ron pool their stock and open a store on Hollywood Boulevard. The Borsts moved to California in 1979, HMP moved into Artisanâs Patio, and Borst bought out his partner two years later. Even the location, which L. A. Declared an official historic-cultural landmark in 1989, turned out to be kind of a movie geekâs dream." Hardcover. First edition, binding variant. Tall 8vo., orig. green cloth (darker that usual) with decoration in black on upper cover, blind on rear, with elaborate gilt decoration on the spine, yellow e/papers, xvi, 333pp. Inner hinges cracked, some light wear o/w very good. The lack of gilt decoration on the upper cover would seem to indicate a later binding but for the curious fact that the elaborate gilt stamped design on the spine is quite different from the other pattern we have seen, as is the decoration on the upper cover. Not what one would usually expect from an attempt to sell off unsold sheets in a cheaper binding. A curious example of a 19th century binding mystery.
