La novela histórica es un género que hoy en día goza de mucho éxito popular pero también que, al menos desde el siglo XIX, se ha ilustrado con obras maestras de la literatura occidental, desde Walter Scott hasta Carlos Fuentes, pasando por Manzoni, Valle-Inclán y M. Yourcenar. A pesar de… ello, y de los numerosos estudios que existen sobre el tema, no se observa ningún consenso acerca de lo que se entiende precisamente por "novela histórica" y, al contrario, coexisten concepciones tan heterogéneas como poco fundamentadas. Por eso, la ambición primera del presente libro consiste en un intento de (re)definición que nos lleve más allá de fronteras ilusorias y de taxonomías falaces, para integrar dentro de una misma problemática general obras habitualmente encasilladas en categorías estancas. En segundo lugar, frente a la inmensa diversidad de novelas históricas, y a las clasificaciones generalmente muy reductoras que dan cuenta de ella, se proponen criterios de caracterización intrínseca y extrínseca que permiten distinguir una rica multiplicidad de "fórmulas" y "tipos". La tipología final ofrece, al tiempo que una perspectiva sobre las posibilidades del género, un mapa de orientación por la abrumadora variedad del mismo.
