Johnnie Lees was a key figure in reorganising the RAF Mountain Rescue Service to perform a post-war role in saving injured, crag-fast, or simply lost, climbers and hillwalkers. His steadfastness one winter's night, being lowered down the ice-smeared cliffs of Amphitheatre Buttress in Snowdonia with an injured and delirious Army major strapped to his back, earned Lees the George Medal - reckoned to be the only honour of its kind ever awarded for bravery in British mountaineering. He was married to mountain guide and novelist Gwen Moffat, and features prominently in her book about RAF Mountain Rescue, Two Star Red. Association Copy.
