First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. Lee Everrett (Author photograph) (illustrator). First Printing [Stated]. xi, [1], 546, [1] pages. Illustrations. Archives and Abbreviations. Chronology of Works by Edith Wharton. Primary Works Cited. A Note on Edith Wharton's Letters to Morton Fullerton. Notes. Index. Smudge on bottom edge. Drawing on many previously unavailable sources, the author offers a feminist perspective on the life and work of Edith Wharton, from questions about her paternity to her marriage, affairs, and relationships. Shari Gabrielson Goodmann (December 2, 1944 May 26, 2015), who published as Shari Benstock, was chairperson of the English department at the University of Miami and a feminist literary scholar. She was an expert on literary modernism, and a biographer of Edith Wharton. She edited Tulsa Studies in Women's Literature from 1983 until 1986. In 1986, she published Women of the Left Bank, which explores the lives and works of some two dozen American, English and French women among the Paris expatriate literari. Edith Newbold Wharton (January 24, 1862 August 11, 1937) was an American writer and designer. Wharton drew upon her insider's knowledge of the upper-class New York "aristocracy" to portray, realistically, the lives and morals of the Gilded Age. In 1921, she became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for her novel The Age of Innocence. She was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1996. Her other well-known works are The House of Mirth, the novella Ethan Frome, and several notable ghost stories. Her husband, Edward Wharton, shared her love of travel and for many years, they spent at least four months of each year abroad, mainly in Italy. Derived from a Kirkus review: This inclusive biography of Wharton (born Edith Newbold ``Pussy'' Jones, 1862-1937) draws its title from a poem by Matthew Arnold describing someone who `conquered fate.' Benstock tells the story of a young woman whose fate wasn't so bad that it needed to be conquered. Born with great talent, connections, and financial resources, Wharton married into her own leisured class and enjoyed a position that allowed her to travel, entertain, and create beautiful homes. She was financially and socially able to indulge in the uncertain vocation of writing. Between 1878 and 1937, she published 44 volumes: poems, short stories, travel books, memoirs, cultural criticism, aesthetics, and novels (including The Age of Innocence, 1920). While critics disagreed over her Victorian elegance as much as over her astute social criticism, she was granted doctorates of letters at Yale, Columbia, and Rutgers; honored by the American Academy; and awarded a Pulitzer Prize. She found `gifts' in admiring friends such as Henry James and Theodore Roosevelt. She also found a generous, powerful, grateful publisher, Charles Scribner, who called her `the George Eliot of her time'' and introduced her to F. Scott Fitzgeraldwho, according to conflicting legends, either fell at her feet or threatened to jump out the window. Writing the first Wharton biography to draw on unpublished as well as published sources, Wharton appears to have been a fortunate woman who made excellent use of her opportunities, resources, and talents.
