Sans doute parce qu'il met un point d'honneur a illustrer ce qu'y declare un de ses protagonistes: L'art est ambigu . Ainsi ignore-t-on si le Beau est le but de l'admiration du heros, musicien vieillissant, pour le jeune Tadzio, ou s'il n'est qu'un pretexte pour masquer une vulgaire attirance pedophile. Et que dire de ces longs plans descriptifs, ou l'on regarde regarder un personnage qui litteralement se decompose sous nos yeux? Le livre examine a nouveaux frais ces ambiguites de fond et de forme, il analyse les rapports entre le film et la nouvelle dont il est tire, sans oublier de le replacer dans l'oeuvre de Visconti ni de brosser l'histoire de sa reception. On est alors mieux equipe pour comprendre les raisons qui font que Mort a Venise, pres de cinquante ans apres sa sortie, continue d'exercer sa fascination.
