Zwar geben sie ihren fiktionalen Status stets durch externe oder interne Markierungen zu erkennen, doch beim Fernsehpublikum sorgen sie meist dennoch für Irritationen. Die Forschung attestiert mockumentaries dabei aufgrund der ihnen inhärenten Reflexion der dokumentarischen Gattung und ihrer persuasiven Wirkstrategien ein aufklärerisch-subversives Potential. Carolin Lano ordnet diese prominente Forschungsthese in einen theoriegeschichtlichen Traditionszusammenhang und relativiert den Kurzschluss zwischen Reflexion und Subversion. Sie plädiert dafür, bei der Frage nach den Funktionen von mockumentaries auch dispositive, institutionelle und paratextuelle Kontexte zu berücksichtigen. Denn dokumentarische Filme können jeweils von diskursiv ausgehandelten Glaubwürdigkeitsattesten flankiert werden, die von unterschiedlichen Instanzen ausgehen. In der exemplarischen Analyse zweier TV-mockumentaries, die beide von dem Kulturkanal ARTE ausgestrahlt wurden, bezieht die Autorin auch diese Rahmungen in ihre Betrachtungen mit ein.Vor diesem erweiterten Hintergrund stellt sich die Frage nach den Funktionsweisen von mockumentaries neu.
