Après les Jeux funèbres en l honneur de Patrocle, tué par Hector, le fils de Priam, le chant XXIV de l Iliade s ouvre sur les mauvais trait…ements infligés par Achille au corps d Hector, qu il a tué devant Troie. Zeus tranche le débat qui s est élevé chez les Olympiens c est l une des clés de la fin du poème : Hector n est pas dérobé à Achille, Thétis va dire à son fils l indignation des dieux ; celui-ci accepte de rendre le mort contre rançon. Visité par Iris, Priam part seul avec un vieux héraut au camp des Grecs, chez Achille, racheter Hector. Le voyage, guidé par Hermès, qui apparaît sous les traits d un jeune Myrmidon, est peint comme un voyage périlleux, une catabase, et un exploit guerrier. Puis vient la rencontre de Priam et d Achille. Les deux ennemis se rejoignent, dans la douleur et dans un regard ; la scène, célèbre pour l émotion qu elle suscite, est aussi un face-à-face complexe. Achille rend le mort que les dieux avaient protégé, offre une trêve. Ce sont enfin le retour à Troie, la douleur collective et les funérailles. Le présent volume propose, avec une traduction et une introduction, un commentaire suivi du dernier chant de l Iliade, qui est l un des chants du poème les plus admirés depuis l Antiquité, mais aussi un dénouement dont les difficultés sont connues ; en s adossant à la critique, le commentaire s attache à montrer dans la question du traitement du corps de l ennemi vaincu l un des fils conducteurs de l Iliade, dans le chant XXIV une fin préparée et dans les funérailles accordées à Hector par Achille une alternative mise sur la scène épique à la colère héroïque, une gloire (kleos) redéfinie du héros guerrier.
